Starter Clutch (CRF450X)

Starter Reduction

Removal

Remove the three starter reduction gear holder bolts with a 10 mm socket.

Remove the starter reduction gear holder from the crankcase.

Remove the starter reduction gear A and starter idle gear from the reduction gear holder.

Measure the diameter of the idle gear and reduction gear A shafts on the gear holder with a micrometer. Replace the gear holder if the shafts are out of specification.

Measure the inside diameter of the starter idle and reduction A gears.

Remove the starter reduction gear B and shaft from the crankcase.

Measure the inside diameter of the reduction gear B and the outside diameter of its shaft. Replace the parts as needed.

Installation

Lubricate the sliding surfaces of the of the gear holder with molybdenum oil solution.

Install the reduction gear A and idle gear onto the gear holder.

Lubricate the starter reduction gear B and shaft with fresh transmission oil and install them into the crankcase.

Apply fresh transmission oil to the three gear holder bolts and install the gear holder into the right crankcase. Torque the gear holder bolts to specification.

(Specification for gear holder bolt torque is 18 N-m or 13 ft-lb)

Disassembly

To remove the starter clutch remove the primary drive gear. See the Balancer topic for more information

Turn the starter drive gear. It should turn smoothly counterclockwise, but not at all clockwise. Lift the starter drive gear out of the starter clutch.
