United States Year Designations

Since 1980 the model year of any street legal vehicle (and most dirt motorcycles and ATVs) is designated by the 10th digit of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) by US Federal law, regardless of the date of manufacture. When ordering spare parts or finding technical information, it is important that you know the correct model year of your vehicle.
