OEM
October 18, 2007
OEM is an abbreviation for Original Equipment (of the) Manufacturer. In motorcycle lingo the term is often thrown around when discussing replacement parts. It would be perfectly reasonable for your local Yamaha dealer to recommend that you use only OEM parts on the Yamaha motorcycle he just sold you. Meaning he wants you to buy and install official Yamaha oil filters and not an aftermarket brand such as Vesrah or Fram. In some cases using parts other than OEM can void your warranty on your new motorcycle. The truth is that many OEM parts such as brakes and oil filters are actually identical to some of the private label aftermarket brands - that’s because they are the same ones making the OEM parts. When in doubt always go OEM.
