Oil Strainer Screen

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Drain the engine oil. See the Oil and Filter Change topic for more information.

Remove the bracket that holds the lower end of the clutch cable using an 8 mm wrench and remove the cable from the clutch release arm. Rotate the clutch release arm towards the rear of the motorcycle and pull out the release arm.

Remove the fifteen clutch cover bolts using an 8 mm wrench.

Pull off the clutch cover. If the cover is stuck, tap it gently using a rubber mallet. If the gasket tears, remove all traces of the old gasket from the engine case and the clutch cover.

The oil strainer screen will sometimes come out with the crankcase cover. Remove the screen from the cover.

Clean the oils strainer screen with a high flash-point solvent. Check the passage behind the screen for additional debris. Out motor had suffered significant damage and the strainer screen showed it.

Install the strainer screen into the crankcase.

Place a new gasket into position if the old one was removed, install the clutch cover and tighten the fifteen bolts securely using an 8 mm wrench.

Reinstall the clutch release arm, reattach the clutch cable and bolt the clutch cable bracket back into position using an 8 mm wrench. Adjust the clutch cable as necessary.

Add engine oil. See the Oil and Filter Change topic for more information. Start the engine and check for leaks.
