Valve Train Removal

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Before doing this, make sure you have each valve measurement recorded, you will need them later when choosing the new valve shim sizes.

Loosen the 12 mm cam chain adjuster cap bolt one turn using a 12 mm wrench.

Remove the two cam chain holder bolts that secure the housing to the cylinder using a 10 mm wrench.

Remove the cam chain adjuster from the cylinder.

Remove the eight bolts that secure the cam towers to the cylinder head using a 10 mm wrench.

Remove the cam covers from the cams paying special attention not to damage the oil pipe. Note the location of each cam cover so it will be installed in the same place.

Remove the three bolts that secure the cam chain tower in place using an 8 mm wrench. Pay special attention not to drop the bolts into the engine. You can insert a clean shop towel in the cam chain area to help prevent this from happening.

Remove the cam chain guide tower.

Lift up on the cam chain and remove the camshafts. Use a piece of wire to keep the cam chain from falling into the engine.

Inspect the camshafts and camshaft journal caps for wear and damage. Replace the components as needed.

Make sure the automatic compression release weights are closed at rest and will move smoothly out. The weights should smoothly return to rest after being extended. The weights must stick in place, and either not giving a compression release, or releasing the compression while the engine is running.
