Water Pump

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

SAFETY FIRST: Antifreeze is highly toxic and can kill pets and animals if drank. Do not leave coolant where animals can get to it.

At the very bottom of the water pump is a “tell tale” hole. If coolant is leaking out of this hole, the mechanical seal in the water pump is defective and must be replaced.

Water Pump Removal

Drain the engine oil. See the Engine Oil topic for more information.

Drain the coolant. See the Coolant Replacement topic for more information.

Remove the three bolts that hold the water pump cover in place using an 8 mm wrench. The coolant hoses are shown removed but they do not need to be.

Remove the water pump cover.

Note: If the gasket is torn, make sure to remove all traces of the gasket from the water pump and the water pump cover or you will have a coolant leak when the engine reaches operating temperature.

Remove the water pump impeller nut using a 10 mm socket.

Remove the impeller.

Remove the .8 mm thick shim.

Remove the flange.

Use a 90° pick to remove the mechanical seal and the oil seal beneath it.

Water Pump Assembly

Apply a thin film of high temperature grease to the lip of the oil seal and drive it into position using a seal driver. If a seal driver is not available, use a socket with an outside diameter the same as the OD of the oil seal. Make sure it is fully seated.

Apply a thin film of coolant to the sealing surface of the mechanical seal and carefully drive it into position.

Install the flange and the .8 mm thick shim.

Apply a thin film of coolant to the rubber seal on the impeller.

Install the impeller, washer and nut. Torque the nut to specification.

Impeller nut torque: 7.8 N-m or 69 in-lb

Scrape the gasket material from the water pump and the water pump cover. Make sure to get every last little bit or you will have a water leak when the engine gets to full operating temperature. Install the water pump cover with a new gasket, making sure to align the two locating pins, and tighten the bolts securely using an 8 mm wrench.

Fill the radiator with coolant. See the Coolant Replacement topic for more information.

Fill the engine with oil. See the Engine Oil topic for more information.

Start the engine, bring it up to operating temperature and check for leaks.
