SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.
Fuel Tank Removal

Remove the screws holding the left and right side covers in place using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver. Carefully remove each panel. See the Side Covers topic for more information.

Remove the seat bolts on each side of the seat using a 10 mm wrench. See the Seat topic for more information.

Disconnect the negative lead from the battery using a 10 mm wrench.

Turn the fuel petcock to the OFF position. Disconnect the fuel line (large) and the vacuum line (small) from the gas tank petcock valve.

Remove the two rear tank bolts using a 10 mm wrench.

Remove both radiator shrouds using an 8 mm socket and a Phillips head screwdriver. See the Radiator Shroud topic for complete information.

Carefully pull the tank to the rear of the motorcycle and lift it off of the frame.

The inside of the fuel tank has grooves that slide onto a rubber mount – take note of this upon reassembly.

Inspect the rubber tank cushions for cracking or damage – replace as needed.
Fuel Tank Installation
Install the tank in the reverse order of disassembly. Make sure that no cables or wires are pinched and that the throttle works properly before riding the motorcycle.
