Front Brake Disc Inspection

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Inspection

Using a suitable jack lift the front wheel just off the ground. 

Using a dial gauge and magnetic stand, measure the run-out of the front disc by rotating the disc slowly. Compare your measurement with specification.

Using a micrometer measure the thickness of the brake disc and compare your reading to specification.

brake disc thickness is no less than 2.5 mm)

 

Replace the front brake disc if it does not meet either of these specifications.

Removal and Installation

Remove the two Allen bolts holding the front brake caliper to the fork leg using a 6 mm Allen wrench and remove the front caliper.

Remove the front wheel. See the Front Wheel Removal topic for more information.

Remove the nine Allen bolts that secure the brake rotor to the front wheel using a 6 mm Allen wrench.

After the bolts are removed install the new disc and apply a thread locking agent such as blue Loctite to the brake disc bolts. Torque the bolts to their proper specification.

front brake disc bolt torque: 23 N-m or 16.5 ft-lb
