Front Brake Removal & Inspection

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Removal

If there is a squealing or grinding noise coming from the front caliper when applying the front brake lever, you will need to remove the caliper and inspect the brake pads.

Remove the two Allen bolts that secure the front brake caliper to the fork leg mounting tabs using a 6 mm Allen wrench.

Measure the thickness of the brake pad lining and compare your reading with specification.

brake pad thickness is no less than 1 mm)

Use needle nose pliers and remove the hitch pin from the brake pad pin.

Remove the brake pad pin from the front brake caliper.

Compress the brake holder bracket all the way in to remove the brake pads.

Remove the brake pads from the front caliper.

Remove the brake caliper holder and inspect for any wear or damage to the pins and rubber protector boots – replace as needed.

Pump the front brake lever a couple of times so the front caliper piston will move outwards. Clean around the piston area with brake cleaner and remove the dirt and road grime that accumulates over a period of riding. This will help prevent premature wear of the brake piston seals. Failure to perform this procedure when replacing the brake pads, can cause brake fluid leakage.

Clean and grease the slider pins with a good waterproof grease.

Installation

Install the brake holder bracket into the front caliper.

Install the new brake pads into the front caliper.

Clean the brake pad pin with a wire brush and smear a thin layer of grease on it.

Install the brake pin through the brake pads and into the brake caliper. Re-install the hitch pin.

Install the front caliper onto the front brake disc making sure the brake disc fits in between the two brake pads.

Use a thread locking agent on the rear caliper mounting bolts such as blue Loctite.

Tighten the front caliper mounting bolts to their proper torque specification.

front caliper mounting bolt torque: 25 N-m or 18.0 ft-lb

Before riding, pump the front brake lever until it becomes firm. Check for leaks and make sure the fluid level is correct.
