SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.
Remove the front wheel. See the Front Wheel Removal topic for more information.
Remove the front brake caliper. See the Front Brake Pad Replacement topic for more information.
Remove the nut the secures the speedometer cable to the right fork using a 10 mm wrench.
Loosen the fork cap bolt one turn at this time using a 19 mm wrench.
Loosen the upper and lower pinch bolts that secure the forks to the triple tree using two 12 mm wrenches.
Twist back and forth on the fork leg while pulling downwards to remove it.
Use a #2 Phillips head screwdriver to loosen the fork boot clamp and remove the rubber fork boot.
Remove the Phillips head drain screw using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver and drain the fork oil into a container.


Remove the already loosened fork cap bolt using a 19 mm wrench and pull out the washer and spacer.
Remove the fork spring.
Remove the damper rod Allen bolt using a 10 mm Allen wrench while using the special tool to hold the damper rod from turning.


If the special tool is not available you can use a piece of 3/4″ PVC pipe that fits into the end of the damper rod. Push inwards holding pressure on the PVC pipe while spinning the Allen bolt loose with an air wrench.
Drain any remaining fork oil from the fork leg.
Remove the damper rod assembly from the fork tube.
Remove the fork seal retaining clip with a small flat blade screwdriver. Be careful not to scratch the fork tube.


Pull the inner fork up while pulling the outer fork down using a slide hammer motion to separate them.


Remove the fork bushings, washer and oil seal from the fork tube.
