Fuel Strainer

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Fuel Strainer Removal

Drain the fuel, and remove the fuel tank. See the Fuel Tank topic for more information.

Loosen the two petcock mounting bolts with a #3 Phillips screwdriver 10 mm socket. Remove the bolts and washers. Remove the petcock from the fuel tank.

Fuel Strainer Disassembly

Remove the petcock-to-tank seal and discard it. This seal should be replaced with a new item on reassembly.

Check the fuel strainer for tears and foreign particles. Clean the fuel strainer with a high flash point solvent and compressed air.

NOTE: Always wear safety glasses when using compressed air and never point it directly at yourself or anyone else.

Remove the two petcock knob screws with a #2 Phillips screwdriver.

Remove the petcock knob plate.

Remove the washer.

Remove the knob from the petcock body.

Remove the knob O-ring and petcock seal. Replace these with new items on reassembly.

Inspect the petcock for damage and clogging. Clean the petcock with a high flash point solvent and compressed air.

Fuel Strainer Assembly

Install the petcock valve seal and place a new O-ring on the knob. Insert the knob into the petcock.

Install the petcock plate washer.

Install the petcock plate.

Install the two petcock knob plate screws and tighten them securely with a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Insert the fuel strainer into the fuel tank so that the petcock knob faces outside.

Insert the fuel strainer mounting bolts with new sealing washers. Tighten the bolts securely with a 10 mm socket or a #3 Phillips screwdriver.
