The engine idle speed should be checked before (and during) every ride. On the Kawasaki KLR650, use the tachometer provided on the motorcycle to adjust the idle speed to specification.
Engine idle speed: 1,200 to 1,400 rpm

Turn the white plastic idle speed screw to adjust the engine idle speed. Turning the screw clockwise increases the idle speed, counterclockwise lowers if.
High Altitude Adjustment
At altitudes above 4,000 ft (1,219 m) the air density results in an overly rich running condition. To correct for this situation change the main jet to a #145 and the pilot jet to a #38 (1987 – 2001 Models).
