Oil and Filter Change
SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.
Run the engine until it has reached operating temperature. A good time to change your oil is when you have returned from a ride.
Always be careful working around a motorcycle engine that is hot – you can burn yourself if you do not take proper precautions. Hot oil is especially dangerous as it can splash and burn you.
Park the motorcycle on a level surface and rest it on its side stand.

Locate the engine oil drain plug on the bottom of the engine and place an oil drain pan directly beneath it.

Remove the oil filler cap and inspect the cap and O-ring – replace as needed.

Loosen and remove the oil drain bolt using a 17 mm socket. Drain the oil into a drain pan while holding the motorcycle upright until the oil stops draining. Place the motorcycle back on its side stand and reinstall the drain plug. Torque it to specification.
Oil drain plug torque: 23 N-m or 17 ft-lb

Remove the two oil filter cover bolts using an 8 mm wrench.

Carefully remove the oil filter cover with a flat blade screwdriver using the pry point provided. Inspect the oil filter cover and O-ring for damage. Replace the O-ring as needed.

Pull the filter from the housing and note how it was installed. To clean the oil strainer screen see the Oil Strainer Screen topic for more information.

Inspect the filter housing for any debris. Clean out the oil filter cavity with a shop rag.

Install the new oil filter. It’s a good idea to saturate the new filter with clean engine oil to speed up oil getting to the top end of the engine upon startup.

Reinstall the two filter cover bolts and tighten them securely.
Pour fresh oil of the recommended amount and type into the filler hole using a funnel.
2.2 L or 2.33 US qt if the oil filter was not removed.
2.5 L or 2.645 US qt if the oil filter was replaced.

With the motorcycle completely level and upright, visually inspect the oil level through the sight glass. Reinstall the plastic oil filler cap. Wipe any excess oil from the frame and engine.
Run the motorcycle for several minutes and check for oil leaks.
Stop the engine, let it sit for one or two minutes and check the oil level again making sure the motorcycle is completely level and upright. Add oil as needed.
