Rear Wheel Removal

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Raise the rear wheel of the motorcycle just off the ground with a suitable jack. Secure the vehicle so that it can not fall.

Remove the cotter pin from the end of the axle. Replace the pin with a new one of the same size.

Remove the axle nut and washer using a 24 mm wrench.

While not required for rear wheel removal, it is recommended that you remove the rear caliper at this time. Removing the rear caliper allows you to inspect it and provides ease of installation of the rear wheel.

Loosen the two brake caliper mounting bolts using a 6 mm Allen socket. Support the caliper so that its weight is not being held up by the hose.

Gently tap the rear axle with a plastic hammer to drive it out the other side. Never use a steel hammer, you could damage the axle.

Pull the axle through the other side.

Work the chain free from the rear sprocket.

Remove the rear wheel from the motorcycle.

See the Rear Wheel Inspection topic for more information.
