Steering Removal and Inspection

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Remove the headlight. See the Headlight Removal topic for more information.

Remove the front wheel. See the Front Wheel Removal topic for more information.

Remove front brake caliper. See the Front Brake Pad Replacement topic for more information.

Remove the four plastic caps from the handlebar pinch Allen bolts using a pick or a small screwdriver.

Remove the Allen bolts using a 6 mm Allen wrench and remove the handlebar clamps. Lay the handlebars to the side, making sure not to put any tension on the cables and wires.

Loosen the upper and lower triple clamp pinch bolts on both sides using two 12 mm wrenches and slide the forks out of the triple clamps.

Remove the steering head nut using a 27 mm wrench and remove the washer.

Remove the upper triple clamp from the steering stem. If the upper triple clamp is hard to remove, tap it gently on each side with a plastic hammer.

Remove the washer and the steering head bearing adjustment nut. If a special tool is not available you can gently tap the nut with a punch and hammer in the castellations of the nut.

Hold the lower steering stem bracket to keep it from falling out when removing the steering shaft castellated nut.

Remove the upper bearing from the upper steering race.

Remove the lower bearing from the steering stem using a hammer and chisel. Pay special attention not to damage the steering stem.

Remove the upper and lower steering stem races by using a bearing race remover. If this tool is not available you can use a long drift to remove the races.
