Fuses and Relays

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Fuse Box

Remove the seat. See the Seat topic for more information.

The fuse box is located under the seat.

Lift out the fuse box to inspect the fuses.

The top of the box is marked to indicate the fuses. The main fuse is located with the starter relay.

Remove the cover and change out any blown fuses with the correct replacement.

Starter Relay

Removal

Remove the seat. See the Seat topic for more information.

Free the starter relay from the frame.

Unplug the starter relay connector.

Inspect the main fuse (30 A) and replace it as needed.

The starter relay terminal bolts secure the starter motor lead and the positive battery lead. Remove the starter relay terminal bolts with a 4 mm Allen and free the leads from the relay.

Inspection

Set the multimeter to read ohms of resistance (Ω).

Jump a 12 V batter to the relay as indicated. The red line indicates the positive line from the jump and the green line the negative jump wire. Measure the resistance between the starter relay terminals as indicated by the multimeter lines.

Remove the jump and measure the resistance again.

When the battery is jumped to the relay there should be 0 Ω between the terminals.

The resistance should show infinity when the jump is removed.

Remove the starter circuit relay.

Set the multi meter to read ohms of resistance (Ω).

Starter Circuit Relay Inspection

There are two starter circuit relays, one for the brake switch circuit and one for the neutral switch circuit. Test them both in the same manne and replace as needed.

Jump a 12 V batter to the relay as indicated. The red line indicates the positive line from the jump and the green line the negative jump wire. Measure the resistance between the relay terminals as indicated by the multimeter lines.

Remove the jump and measure the resistance again.

When the battery is jumped to the relay there should be 0 Ω between the terminals.

The resistance should show infinity when the jump is removed.

Installation

Connect the starter motor and positive battery cable to the starter relay. Install the terminal bolts and tighten them securely with a 4 mm Allen.

Install an intact main fuse (30 A).

Plug in the starter relay connector.

Fit the starter relay onto the frame. Guide the fingers into the rubber relay holder.

Install the starter circuit relays to their correct positions.
