Air Cleaner Draining
Remove the clamp and plug from the drain hose to drain any water or oil. Install the plug and clamp after draining.
Removal
Remove the seat. See the Seat topic for more information.
Remove the two quick release pins on the 2005 and newer 650 models with a flat head screwdriver or the ignition key.
The 700 and older 650 models have a single quick release pin at the base of the cover and two pivot pins at the front. Remove these three pins on these models.
Remove the air cleaner upper cover by pulling it back and off.
Release the airbox clamps.
Remove the airbox cover.
Lift out the air filter on the 2002 models.
Remove the air filter thumbscrews.
Remove the air filter from the airbox.
Slide the filter off of the holder.
Servicing
Place the filter in a container and saturate it with a foam air filter cleaner both inside and out. Products like Simple Green, dish soap, or most non-flammable solvents will work if foam air filter cleaner is unavailable.
Let the filter soak for approximately 5 minutes – follow cleaning product instructions if different. Rinse the element in warm water until the water runs clear. You may squeeze the filter to remove excess cleaner but never twist it.
Let the air filter dry completely.
Once the element is completely dry, blow it of with compressed air or pat it down with a clean shop towel to remove any remaining debris.
NOTE: Always wear safety glasses when using compressed air and never point it directly at yourself or anyone else.
Oil the filter with foam air filter oil. Squeeze out any excess oil.
Clean the out the airbox.
Installation
Insert the holder into the filter.
Install the air filter into the airbox.
Install the thumbscrews on the 2003 and newer models and tighten them securely.
Install the airbox cover.
Secure the airbox cover with the clamps.
Align the tabs of the air cleaner upper cover and install it on the 2005 and newer 650 models.
On the 700 and 2002 – 2003 650 models fit the cover into place and install the front two pivot pins.
Install the quick release fastener/s with a flat head screwdriver or the ignition key.
