Crankcase Bearings

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Inspection

Split the crankcases. See the Crankcases topic.

Remove the crankshaft and transmission as needed. See the Crankshaft and Connecting Rods and Transmission Removal topics for more information.

Inspect the crankcase bearings. Turn the bearings with a finger. They should turn freely with out noise or binding, but also without excessive play. Make sure the outer races of the bearings are secure in the crankcase.

The left crankshaft bearing is part of the crankcase half. The crankcases must be replaced if this bearing is in poor condition.

Place the new bearing in the freezer at least a half hour before you plan to install them.

The right crankshaft bearing is a ball type that can be replaced if needed. Fist remove the bearing retainer screws with a #3 Phillips impact screwdriver. Remove the bearing retainer plates and the oil seal. Drive the bearing out from the outside of the case.

Drive the new bearing in by its outside diameter with a suitable driver. Install a new oil seal. Apply a non-permanent thread locking agent (Blue Loctite) to the threads of the bearing retainer plate screws. Tighten the screws to specification with a #3 Phillips screwdriver.

Bearing Position Plate Screws [2005 – 2011, 700cc]: 4.9 N-m, 0.50 kgf-m, 43 in-lb

Note – The 2002 – 2003 models do not have bearing retainer plates for the right crankcase bearing.

Replace the rest of the crankcase bearings as needed. Use a suitable bearing puller to remove them.

Drive in the new bearings by their outside diameter with a suitable driver. The bearings must fit squarely in the case and be fully seated.

Oil Seals

If the crank bearing or mainshaft oil seal needs to be replaced remove it with a seal pick.

Lubricate the lips of the new seal with grease. Drive in the new seal so that it sits 3 mm (0.12 in.) below the surface of the crankcase.
