SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.
Removal
Position the shift lever knob in the neutral position.
Loosen the shift lever knob locknut with a 12 mm wrench. Take off the shift lever knob.
Remove the side covers. See the Side Covers topic for more information.
Loosen the air duct clamp screws with a #2 Phillips screwdriver.
Remove the air duct.
Remove the shift lever tie-rod nut with a 12 mm wrench and free the shift lever linkage from the engine.
The shift shaft cover is located in the top of the right crankcase half. Mark the position of the shift shaft lever so that it can be returned to its original position.
Loosen the shift shaft pinch bolt with a 10 mm socket.
Remove the shift shaft pinch bolt and the shift shaft lever from the shaft.
Remove the upper part of the linkage and shift age if needed.
Installation
Install the shifter lever rod into its tie-rod base so that the flat pivot arm is 77 ± 10° clockwise from the tie-rod nut.
Tighten the shifter tie-rod locknut to specification.

Fit the shifter tie-rod the frame with the wire guide and install the nut. Tighten the nut to specification.

Install the shift gate if it was removed. Tighten its bolts to specification.

Position the shift lever in the neutral position.
Fit the shift shaft lever onto the shaft so that it sits in its original position.
Install the shift shaft pinch bolt and tighten it securely with a 10 mm socket.
Connect the shift lever linkage to the engine. Install the shift lever tie-rod nut and torque it to specification with a 12 mm socket.

Make sure the tie-rods joints are sitting straight. They should not be forced to one side or the other. Also, the shift shaft should naturally move to the left when free. Adjust the shift linkage shaft as needed.
Tighten the shaft locknuts to specification. Note the front locknut has left hand threads.

Install the air duct.
Tighten the air duct clamp screws securely with a #2 Phillips screwdriver.

Install the shift lever knob and tighten the lock nut to specification with a 12 mm wrench.
